How to Make a Backing Track From Any Song
The internet is full of tools promising to strip the vocals out of any song, and most of what they promise is not achievable. Here is what is actually happening under the bonnet, why the result sounds watery, and how to build a practice track that is useful rather than technically impressive.

The short answer
A backing track is made by subtracting parts from a finished stereo mix, and subtraction is always an estimate: there are no separate instruments in the file to remove. For practice, aim for reduction rather than removal: drop the vocal enough to play or sing over, keep enough of it to hear the phrasing, and use EQ to push whichever part you are replacing out of the way. Then slow it down and loop the section you are working on.
Why this is hard, in one paragraph
A released song is not a set of instruments. It is two channels of audio in which every instrument has already been summed together, permanently. Asking to remove the vocals is like being handed a finished soup and asked to remove the salt. Nothing in the file marks which part of the waveform was a voice: that information was destroyed at the mixdown, and every tool that claims to undo it is reconstructing a guess.
This is worth understanding because it sets your expectations correctly. The question is never “does this tool work”, it is “how good is the guess, and are the artefacts acceptable for what I need”. For practice, the bar is much lower than people assume.
The two approaches
Phase cancellation is the old method, and it exploits a mixing convention: lead vocals are almost always placed dead centre, meaning identical in both channels. Subtract the right channel from the left and anything identical in both disappears. Instant, free, requires no model.
It also destroys everything else that is centred, which in most mixes means the kick drum, the snare and the bass guitar. You are left with a thin, hollow track of guitars, keyboards and reverb, missing its entire rhythmic foundation, which is a poor backing track for almost everybody. It also fails completely on any vocal with stereo doubling or wide reverb.
Stem separation is the modern approach. A model trained on enormous amounts of music learns what voices, drums, bass and other instruments look like in a spectrogram, and estimates each one separately. It is dramatically better and it is guessing, which is why its failures sound different: instead of missing instruments you get smearing, swirling and a watery quality, worst on cymbals and reverb tails.
Reduce, do not remove
This is the practical heart of it, and it goes against the instinct that more removal is better.
Separation artefacts scale with aggression. Pulling a vocal down by 6 or 10 dB requires a far less confident guess than deleting it, so it sounds far cleaner, and for practice it is usually more useful, because a faint vocal is a guide. It tells you where you are in the song, it demonstrates the phrasing you are trying to match, and it stops you drifting a bar out during a long instrumental section.
The same logic applies if you are replacing an instrument rather than a voice. A guitarist learning a solo does not need the original solo gone. They need it quiet enough to be underneath and present enough to check against.
Building a practice track that works
- Start with the best source you have. Separation quality depends heavily on the input. A clean, high-bitrate source separates noticeably better than a compressed one, because the model has more information to work from.
- Reduce the part you are replacing. Vocal reduce for singers, or EQ for instruments. Go as far as you need and no further: check by listening to a chorus, which is where mixes are densest and artefacts are loudest.
- Then EQ to make room for yourself. This is the step people skip and it does more than separation does. If you are playing bass, cut the low end of the track. If you are singing, scoop the midrange around where your voice sits. You are not trying to remove the other instrument, you are trying to leave a gap you can occupy, which is exactly what a mixing engineer would do.
- Set the speed you can actually play it at. A backing track at full speed you cannot keep up with is a performance, not a practice tool. Slow it to where you are accurate, then climb. The whole argument for that is in why slow practice works.
- Loop the section you are actually working on. Nobody needs to hear the intro forty times to practice the bridge. Two to eight bars, repeating. See looping part of a video.
- Check the key before you commit. If the song sits awkwardly in your range or your tuning, transpose it rather than fighting it, changing the key takes a second and costs nothing.
The alternative nobody suggests: do not remove anything
A great deal of the time, the problem you are trying to solve with vocal removal is actually a balance problem, and there is a much simpler fix: turn yourself up.
Playing along to a full mix at a volume where you can clearly hear yourself over it gets you most of what a backing track provides, with none of the artefacts and none of the setup. The reason people reach for removal first is that they are listening on headphones at a fixed volume and cannot hear their own instrument. Amplifying yourself, or taking one earcup off, solves that directly.
Reserve the processing for the cases where it matters: a singer who needs the original voice out of the way to hear their own pitch, or a bassist who cannot hear their own line under the recorded one.
What a backing track will not fix
Playing along to a record is enjoyable and it is a poor diagnostic. The recording is relentless, it never waits for you, and , crucially, it covers your mistakes. A rushed bar sounds fine when there is a drummer holding the tempo, and a note that never quite rang is inaudible under a full band.
So use a backing track for what it is good at: playing in time with something, learning where a part sits in an arrangement, and making practice feel like music. Do the diagnostic work elsewhere, against a bare click, where nothing is hiding, and on a recording of yourself, where you can actually hear what you did.
The short version
Aim lower than the tools promise and you will get something more useful. Reduce rather than remove, EQ a hole for yourself rather than deleting the other instrument, slow it to a tempo you can play, and loop the eight bars that actually need the work. That takes a minute and produces a better practice track than a perfectly separated stem would, because the thing that makes a backing track useful was never how cleanly the vocal came out.
