How to practice with a Drone for Better Intonation
Judging whether a note is in tune against silence is hard: your ear has only its own memory to go on, and memory drifts. Give it a steady reference to compare against and it gets dramatically more sensitive. That's the whole idea: a drone turns intonation from a vague feeling into something you can hear going right or wrong in real time.

The short answer
Set a continuous drone note to the main note of the key you are playing in, the tonic. For a piece in G major, that is G. Hold long notes against it and listen for the wah…wah…wah wobble (beating) to stop. When the wobble vanishes, your intonation is dead in tune.
A tuner can tell you a note is wrong. A drone teaches you what right sounds like.
Why a drone works when a tuner doesn’t
A tuner tells you a note was sharp. It tells you afterwards, one note at a time, with your eyes. That is useful for tuning an instrument and nearly useless for playing one, because by the time you have read the needle you have played four more notes and you are still no better at hearing the problem yourself.
A drone works the other way round. It puts a reference pitch underneath you and lets your ear do the judging, continuously, while you play. Every note you sound forms an interval with the drone, and intervals have a distinct sound (a clean one or a dirty one). You stop thinking in cents and start hearing whether something locks or fights.
This is not a modern practice-hack; it is how a great deal of the world’s music is built: the tanpura behind every Indian classical performance, the drone pipes on the Highland bagpipe, the hurdy-gurdy, the open strings a fiddle player leaves ringing under the melody. Those traditions produce ferociously accurate intonation, and this is a large part of why.
What beating actually sounds like
Two notes that are close but not identical produce a slow pulsing in the volume (awah…wah…wah underneath the sound). That is beating, and the rate is simply how far apart the two frequencies are. Ten cents out gives you a fast nervous flutter. Two cents out gives you a slow swell every couple of seconds. Dead in tune gives you nothing at all: the wobble vanishes and the two notes fuse into one still, slightly louder sound.
That moment of fusing is the thing to chase. It is unambiguous: you do not have to decide whether it sounds good, you can hear the wobble stop. And once your ear knows the feeling, it starts flagging it everywhere, including in ensemble playing where there is no drone at all.
The routine
- Set the drone to the home note of the key, the tonic, the note the key is named after. A piece in G major gets a G. Then get the volume right: loud enough that you never lose it under your own playing, quiet enough that it is not fighting you. If you are drowning it out, you are not really using it.
- Play one long note, hold it, and listen past the attack. Intonation lives in the sustain, not the start. Give each note four beats or so and spend them listening rather than thinking about the next one.
- Walk up the scale, one degree at a time, stopping on each. Do not play it as a scale; play it as eight separate intonation problems. Most people can already hold the tonic, the fourth, and the fifth. That is not where the work is.
- Spend the extra time on the third, sixth and seventh. These are the ones that go first, in that order, and they are the ones that make a phrase sound sour when everything else is fine. If you are on an instrument that can bend pitch, try the note slightly lower than feels right and notice how much cleaner it locks.
- Then move the drone to the fifth of the key (five notes up the scale, D if you were in G) and run exactly the same material. Every interval changes: your home note is now a fourth above the drone, your third is a sixth. Notes that were easy stop being easy. This is the step most people skip, and it is where a lot of the gain is.
- Finish inside a real piece. Leave the drone on the tonic and play the phrase you have actually been struggling with. Intonation problems in scales are abstract; intonation problems in bar 14 of the thing you are learning are the ones worth fixing.
The one thing that makes or breaks this routine is whether the drone is still there when you need it. Why your thirds are sharp (and it might not be you)
Here is the part that confuses people the first time. Play a major third against a drone on a keyboard or a fretted instrument and it will sound faintly hard and restless, no matter how well the instrument is tuned. That is not a mistake you are making. It is equal temperament.
A chord can be perfectly tuned according to a tuner and still sound slightly tense, because the tuning system itself is a compromise. Modern instruments split the octave into twelve identical steps so that every key works equally well, and the price is that most intervals land a little away from the pure version your ear actually wants. Thirds and sixths pay the most; fifths barely pay at all, which is why fifths always sound solid and why they are a poor test of anything. The exact amounts are in the questions at the end if you want them. The point here is that the drone lets you hear those relationships instead of chasing a needle.
What you do about it depends on your instrument. Singers, bowed strings, brass, and winds can all bend a note into the pure interval, and against a drone you will hear exactly how far. It is one of the fastest ways to learn what “playing in tune with the ensemble” physically feels like. Guitar, piano, and anything fretted cannot. There the drone is not teaching you to fix the third; it is teaching you which of your problems are yours.
What a drone catches on guitar
Fretted players sometimes assume drone practice is not for them, because the frets have already decided the pitches. The frets decide less than you think:
- Bends that stop short. The single most common finding. A drone makes a flat bend obvious in a way that playing it fast never does: hold the bend and wait for the wobble to stop.
- Squeezing the note sharp. Pressing hard behind the fret, especially on the first three frets and on bendy strings, pulls the pitch up several cents. Against a drone you can hear your own grip.
- Setup problems. If every note in first position sits sharp against the drone but the twelfth fret is fine, that is a nut height or nut slot problem, not a playing problem, and no amount of practice will fix it.
- Chords that fight. Hold a chord against a drone on its root and listen for which string is causing the churn. Usually it is one, usually it is the third, and usually your fretting hand is pulling it.
If your open strings are the suspect rather than your fingers, start from the tuning reference: it has the exact frequency of every string for 20+ instruments, standard and alternate tunings, and a piano you can sound any note from.
Four other things to do with a held note
Intonation is the reason most people start. It is not the only reason to leave one running:
- Tune to it instead of to a needle. Sound the note you want, match it by ear, and listen for the wobble to stop. That is how an orchestra tunes to an oboe and how a fiddle player tunes to a neighbouring string, and it is faster than a display once your ear knows the sound. - Improvise over it. A drone is the smallest possible backing track. It fixes a key centre and leaves everything else open, so you can work on lines and phrasing without hunting for a jam track or waiting for other people to be free. Set it to the home note of the key and play: every note you choose is now audibly consonant or audibly tense, which is the fastest ear training there is for improvising.
- Break a blank page with it. A held note is a sonic anchor. When nothing is coming, start the drone and let your ear fill in what belongs on top of it: a melody, a chord, a bass line. You are no longer inventing from silence, which is most of why nothing was coming.
- Just sit in it. A sustained tone is a settling sound, and in the traditions this comes from (the tanpura especially) that is not a side effect. Put it on in the key you are about to play in and warm up over it. That is your home for the next hour.
Three ways people waste the exercise
- Droning the note they are playing. Unisons sound in tune even when both notes are wrong together. Drone the tonic and move against it.
- Playing too fast. Beating takes a moment to become audible. If you are playing eighth notes you will hear none of it, and you are just running a scale over a background noise.
- Doing it for half an hour. Concentrated listening burns out fast. Ten focused minutes at the top of a session beats thirty distracted ones at the end, the same reason a click you have stopped hearing has stopped doing anything for you.
Where it fits in a session
Early, and short. Tune, drone for five or ten minutes on the key of whatever you are working on, then get on with the actual material. It is warm-up in the real sense: you are warming up your ear, not your fingers, and the effect carries through the rest of the session in a way that scales at speed never do.
